L’articolo studia il rapporto della poesia epigrafica tardo antica con il cosiddetto ‘stile
moderno’ dell’epica letteraria (lo stile di Nonno e dei suoi seguaci), attraverso l’analisi
di alcuni casi esemplari, come l’epigramma frammentario edito in SEG 56.1921 (Gerasa,
Giordania; 362/363 d.C.); e gli epigrammata longa di Achaïe II 37 Rizakis = SEG 13.277
(Patrasso, IV/V sec.) e SEG 24.1243 (Egitto, seconda metà del V sec.?). Lo studio della
metrica e della lingua di questi epigrammi permette di definire meglio la formazione dello
stile moderno; e di comprendere dal punto di vista storico-sociale le dinamiche di diffusione
del gusto letterario, l’incidenza della formazione scolastica, le attese dei committenti.
Viene infine ribadita l’utilità dell’analisi stilistica per una migliore comprensione della
poesia epigrafica, purché si adotti una visione che tenga conto della complessa convivenza
di molteplici stili, forme e temi che è tipica della tarda antichità (con esempi tratti da SGO
19/17/05 = I.K. Anazarbos I 58, Anazarbo, ca. 516; SGO 02/09/17 = ala2004.31, Afrodisia
IV sec.; GVI 1907 = SEG 34.1003 = 495 Samama, Milano, fine IV/inizio V sec.).
The article deals with the style and language of Late antique epigraphical poetry and
its relationship with the so-called ‘modern style’, typical of the literary epic (of Nonnus
of Panopolis and his followers), through the analysis of some case studies, such as the
fragmentary epigram of SEG 56.1921 ( Jerash; 362/363 CE); or epigrammata longa
such as Achaïe II 37 Rizakis = SEG 13.277 (Patras, IV/V c. CE) and SEG 24.1243
(Egypt, second half of the Vth century CE?). Categories as ‘anticipation’, proper imitation,
and similarity, both in metrics and in language, to the Nonnian style, if applied to
epigraphical poetry are helpful to better understand the dynamics of diffusion of literary
taste, the incidence of school education, the expectations of patrons and audiences.
In the last part of the article I suggest to take account not only of a ‘reference norm’ (as
the Nonnian style), but also of the complex play of multiple styles, forms, and themes
which is a typical feature of Late antique culture and society. I briefly discuss some examples,
