Abstract
After a literature review of the studies that since 1950 have dealt with patriarchal documents, this paper focuses on the 13th century and aims to verify the presence of a patriarchal chancery and to investigate the role of the patriarchal notaries and the appearance of 'documents in book' or 'books of documents'.
