Grunberg abroad. Functions and translations of prose titles
This study discusses form and function of book titles, particularly in the literary oeuvre of Arnon Grunberg. The various translations of Grunberg’s titles are discussed and comparison is made with translation and editing strategies adopted for localizing other Dutch fiction abroad. The author emphasizes the many linguistic and extralinguistic factors which play a role in the recreation of a book title for another linguistic community. Titles and covers are the presentation card of the writer and the publisher. Creating titles that attract an audience is a growing trend in the globalizing world: they fit in nicely with the marketing needs of the publishing house, but may conflict with the literary and aesthetic considerations of writer and translator.
