Il commento di L. Friedländer a Marziale VI 42,4 ('non fontes Aponi rudes puellis') rinvia
alla celebre lettera in cui Cassiodoro, per conto del re Teoderico, impartisce istruzioni al
primo architetto del regno, in merito a restauri da apportare agli impianti termali di 'Aponus'.
Tuttavia tale rinvio, lungi dal chiarire, non risolve alcune difficoltà che commentatori recenti
non hanno mancato di segnalare. Scopo di questo intervento è riepilogare i termini della
questione, ripartendo dal testo e cercando di proporre una soluzione alle difficoltà semantiche
e sintattiche riscontrabili in var. II 39,6. As to Martial VI 42,4 ('non fontes Aponi rudes puellis') we are invited by Friedländer to take
note of the well known letter in which Cassiodorus, on behalf of Theoderic, gives instructions
to the king’s first architect about the thermae in 'Aponus' which must be restored. Yet this
reminder is not very helpful to understand difficulties either in Martial (what is the meaning
of rudes?) or in Cassiodorus. This paper aims to give a fresh view of these problems by a new
approach to the text itself, discussing obscurities both in semantics and syntax of var. II 39,6.
