Abstract
In response to J. Wagemans and G. d'Ydewalle's (see record 1990-13856-001) comment on W. Gerbino and D. Salmaso's (see record 1988-25360-001) findings, asserts that the concepts of amodal completion need rethinking. It conveys the idea that a complete shape is reconstructed out of fragmentary evidence, but what happens in occlusion phenomena is that partly occluded figures do not appear truncated. The work of several researchers is compared. Topics discussed include the context-sensitivity of amodal completion and a literal solution. The literal solution and the completion solution are concurrent representations of the proximal stimulus.
