La Cosmographia di Etico Ister è un testo anonimo di area inglese della prima metà dell’VIII secolo in cui l’autore si autoidentifica con Girolamo, il Padre della Chiesa traduttore della Bibbia in latino. Attraverso il racconto del viaggio di Etico, Girolamo vuole illustrare al suo lettore la conformazione del mondo, integrando così le informazioni lacunose presenti nella Genesi. Il contributo vuole mostrare come l’opera non abbia solo un valore letterario e ironico ma si iscriva perfettamente nel contesto della riflessione altomedievale sul concetto di scientia. The Cosmography of Aethicus Ister is an anonymous text written in English area, in the first half of the eighth century. The author identifies himself with Jerome, the Church Father translator of the Bible. Through the story of the imaginary journey of Ethics, Jerome wants to illustrate how the world is made and supplement the deficient information in the Genesis. The paper aims to show that the work is not only a literary joke, but it is perfectly consistent with the reflection on the concept of scientia present in the Early Middle Ages.
