La pinacoteca, ospitata nel Rettorato, fa parte del patrimonio del Sistema Museale dell'Ateneo di Trieste (smaTs) e riunisce le opere (ventinove dipinti e otto, tra disegni e stampe) acquisite a seguito dell'Esposizione Nazionale di Pittura italiana contemporanea, tenutasi nell'Aula Magna dell'Università, nel dicembre 1953, e rievocata nel 2008, dalla mostrra presso il Civico Museo Revoltella "1953: l'Italia era già qui. Pittura italiana contemporanea a Trieste" (catalogo a cura di Rosella Fabiani, Maria Masau Dan, Nicoletta Zanni). Per iniziativa di Rossella Fabiani, storica dell'arte della Soprintendenza per i Beni Storici Artistici ed Etnoantropologici del Friuli Venezia Giulia, le opere sono state restaurate e poi vincolate dal Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali. Sono qui sintetizzate le schede elaborate a tal fine dalla Soprintendenza e curate da Maria Pinzani. The Picture Gallery in the Rector's (Vice-Chancellor's) offices forms part of the heritage of Sistema Museale dell'Ateneo di Trieste - smaTs (Network of the Museums of Trieste University) and houses the works (29 paintings and 8 prints and drawings) acquired after the National Exhibition of Contemporary Italian Painting held in Aula Magna of the University in December 1953 and brought to life again in 2008 at Civic Revoltella Museum as "1953: Italy was already here.
