Nella prima parte del saggio si delinea un quadro sommario del dibattito intorno
alla ‘New Late Antiquity’, dove l’interpretazione storiografica appare oggi
profondamente divisa. Nel séguito, si rileggono alcune pagine dei Saturnalia di
Macrobio, per contestare le conclusioni cui sono giunti insieme (2011) l’ultimo
editore-commentatore dell’opera e chi ha scritto The Last Pagans of Rome. The paper begins with an overview of the debate about the concept of ‘New Late
Antiquity’, that has so deeply divided scholarship. In the second section, we’ll consider
some passages in Macrobe’s Saturnalia, to contest the conclusions jointly reached by
the most recent critical editor and commentator of the text and by the author of the
very popular The Last Pagans of Rome.
