Cybersecurity solutions ensuring tight access control are essential in preventing intrusions that could inflict devastating impacts on CPSs. In fact, many of these CPS applications are mission-critical: their failure can cause irreparable harm to the physical system being controlled and to people who depend on it. However, sole reliance on traditional access control or intrusion detection methods would be naive, given the large and complex attack surfaces of CPSs and the increasing sophistication of cyber adversaries. Many security measures in CPSs are designed to protect one or more facets of the CIA triad, which is a common framework which refers to Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability.
