Sigma receptors have been studied mostly with respect to their functions within the nervous system. Ligands showing high affinity for sigma-1 vs. sigma-2 subtypes are potential neuroprotective agents. Furthermore, the high densities of both receptor subtypes in many tumor cell lines and tissues suggested their involvement in cancer biology.
