Abstract
Impact FVG 2018-2020 is a project funded by Friuli Venezia Giulia Region and Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF). In Northeastern Italy, University of Udine is collaborating with University of Trieste and a broader team of association and public administrations in order to achieve a higher level of inclusion and equal opportunities for second generation immigrants in local primary and secondary schools. The initial need analysis phase involved a survey with a sociolinguistic questionnaire that reached 1.081 students, an online form for teachers and semi-structured interviews with teachers, school directors, administrative clerks and parents. The first results show a growing trend in the presence of students with migratory background and some uncertainties in their self-perceived and self-described identities. These pupils risk to fall between two words and even defining with precision the one they feel to belong to seems not an easy operation. The maintenance of heritage languages and culture might therefore play a crucial role in the years to come, schools should be prepared and start taking all the necessary evaluations and actions in order to preserve these new and rich forms of multilingualism.
