All’interno del VI libro delle Nuptiae di Marziano Capella, dedicato alla geometria, il § 706 si
configura come una premessa metodologica, articolata in opposizioni binarie: da una parte viene
presentato l’oggetto d’indagine proprio di Geometria, dall’altra quello della germana Aritmetica.
Il § 707 dimostra quanto affermato mediante tre esempi tipici della trattatistica antica: monadepunto,
diade-linea, superficie-numero. L’articolo analizza i due paragrafi alla luce delle fonti
greche, individuate tanto in Euclide ed Erone, quanto nella tradizione ‘platonica’ (Nicomaco,
Giamblico, Teone di Smirne), tenute assieme in una sintesi originale che non ha precedenti nella
storia della geometria a Roma. In the book VI of Martianus Capella’s Nuptiae, devoted to geometry, § 706 is a methodological
introduction articulated in binary oppositions: on the one hand there is the object of own investigation
of Geometry; on the other hand, the object of germana Arithmetic. §707 demonstrates this connection
through three typical examples: monade-dot, diade-line, surface-number. The paper analyzes
the two paragraphs and shows its Greek sources: Euclid and Eron, but also the Platonic tradition
(Nicomachus, Iamblichus, Theon of Smyrna), in an original synthesis that has no precedent in the
history of geometry in Rome.
