The paper presents an interdisciplinary approach to planning sustainable re-use and preservation interventions that is currently being developed within a PhD research in Architecture and in reference to the trans-border territory of Gorizia (Italy) and Nova Gorica (Slovenia). The proposed methodology aims to assist designers and decision makers in evaluating various aspects – referred to socio-cultural, environmental and economic sustainability – during the planning process of sustainable re-use and preservation projects of the built heritage, either legally protected or not. In particular it derives from two other experiences that have been appreciated for their inclusive vision of the sustainability problem and scientifi c approach: the HB model by GBC Italia and the Villas project from 2006 that have been here combined and developed.
