ROSA, Franco

Abstract
The article develops the issue of sustainable and multifunctional urban agriculture representing a substantial contribution to the environmental quality and biodiversity of urban living. The growing population in urban space has increased the competition for the alternative land uses: food production, urban settlements, logistics development, nature conservation. The limit to the sprawl, is followed by a vertical growth of the modern town. After reviewing the trends about the growth of world population and their settlement in the city, this article examines some recent legislative measures and experiences in favor of urban agriculture and proposes a sustainable model of urban agriculture for ecological, aesthetic and nutritional purposes. Some empirical data about crops production obtained from organic substrates generated by organic waste recycling demonstrates the sustainability of this project
