Marina Abramović is the artist par excellence whose work can be identified with Performance Art. Abramović began performing in the heyday of Performance Art, the seventies. She continued performing during the crisis years of performance art in the eighties, then brought new ideas to it when it resurfaced internationally at the beginning of the nineties in different forms.
Starting from her first Museum retrospective at MoMA The Artist is Present (2010), and the institution of the The Marina Abramović Institute for the Preservation of Performance Art, my essay investigates the complex changes that Marina Abramović’s work underwent in relation to the issues of “performing” and “performativity” and the role that Photography played in those transformations.
