Vengono confrontate due opere di Geoffrey of Monmouth: la Historia Regum Britanniae e la Vita Merlini. Dall’una all’altra cambiano sia i personaggi femminili che la stessa figura di Merlino. Nella Historia Merlino è un bambino dalle capacità profetiche, mentre nella Vita è un vecchio mago, impazzito dopo una battaglia, ritiratosi nella foresta. Se nella prima opera il ruolo della figura femminile, cioè della madre, è molto ridotto, nella seconda sia la sorella Ganieda che la moglie Guendoloena giocano un ruolo più importante. Merlino, sebbene sia un bambino, si comporta da adulto e non ha bisogno dell’appoggio esterno di un altro elemento, come invece accadrà successivamente. Non essendo più spiritualmente forte come prima, ha bisogno di un sostegno. Saranno le due donne, con funzioni molto diverse, ad aiutarlo a percorrere il suo cammino di maturazione. Tre personaggi femminili che sembrano comparire accanto a Merlino semplicemente perché legati da parentela, si rivelano quindi essere, per Geoffrey of Monmouth, dei validi alleati nella caratterizzazione anche psicologica del mago. In this paper, two works by Geoffrey of Monmouth are compared: “Historia Regum Britanniae” and “Vita Merlini”. Between the two, there is a change in the female characters and in the figure of Merlin. In the “Historia”, Merlin is a child with prophetic knowledge, while in the “Vita” he is an old wizard, gone crazy after a battle and now living isolated in the forest. If in the first work the female role, that of the mother, is much reduced, in the second one, both the sister Ganieda and the wife Gwendoloena play a much bigger role. Although he is a child, Merlin behaves like an adult man and does not need the external support of another element, as it will happen instead later on. Since his spirit is no longer strong, he needs help. The two women, albeit with very different functions, will assist him in his journey towards maturity. The three female characters, who appear to be beside Merlin just because of family ties, reveal themselves to be, to Geoffrey of Monmouth, real allies in the characterisation, even the psychological one, of the wizard.
