This article introduces the figure of Giovanni Torelli, an Italian mathematician, in his son Lucio’s memories. The figure of the mathematician and the passionate teacher comes to light, but above all Giovanni's desire and ability to establish a relationship with the 'other', be it colleague or student. This reciprocal relationship with the other has become the basis for his teaching style and for an interdisciplinary research work.
