Rispetto ad altre composizioni catalogiche greche e latine incentrate sulle 'γνῶμαι' dei sette
sapienti il 'Ludus' ausoniano evita l’arida successione delle massime ricorrendo all’espediente
della cornice teatrale. L’opera, strutturata come sequenza di nove monologhi, segue a suo
modo le movenze di uno spettacolo; vi sono continui cenni ad un’astratta ambientazione
scenica (fa da sfondo ai personaggi il nudo teatro) e copiosi ricorrono i rinvii alla commedia
e alla produzione di Plauto e di Terenzio. La sezione del 'Prologus', in particolare, non
solo mira a creare una suggestione nel lettore tale per cui, proseguendo con la lettura, non
dimentichi la ‘scenografia’ prevista dall’autore, ma ha anche una finalità informativa perché
sviluppa un percorso storico-moralistico sul teatro repubblicano. Compared with other Greek and Latin compositions about the 'γνῶμαι' of the Seven Wise Men,
Ausonius’ 'Ludus' septem sapientum has something more: the poet writes a play, the succession
of sayings is inserted in a dramatic frame. The poem is made up of nine monologues, which try
to imitate the conventions of the theatrical tradition. The drama is set in one of the theatres at
Rome, but the background is abstract (we only know that it is a stone theatre); there are many
quotations of Plautus and Terence. The 'Prologus' reminds the reader of this scenery and, mostly,
gives him a lot of information about the history of the republican theatre: his point of view is
strictly moralistic.
