Abstract
Le rappresentazioni cartografiche prodotte dagli ordini religiosi sono oramai attestate come una preziosa fonte scientifica delle forme di produzione e di fruizione del sapere geografico realizzate tra il medioevo e l’età moderna. Tuttavia, la letteratura geografica non ha rivolto la medesima attenzione alla cartografia delle congregazioni religiose sorte a partire dal XVII secolo. Tra gli istituti più noti, i mis- sionari di don Bosco furono autori di un buon numero di rappresentazioni cartografiche elaborate durante le loro attività di evangelizzazione itinerante tra le colonie di Europei e le tribù indigene della Patagonia a cavallo tra Ottocento e Novecento. Pertanto, l’obiettivo principale di questo contributo è duplice: ricostruire la funzione attribuita alla cartografia nelle attività svolte dai Salesiani in Argentina e decostruire le trasformazioni del territorio da essi compiute e fissate nelle carte prese in esame. L’articolo analizza dapprima l’interesse dei geografi italiani verso l’azione trasformativa del territorio e il contributo cartografico dei missionari in epoca contemporanea attraverso una rassegna dei loro scritti sul tema ed esamina, poi, quattro carte realizzate dai Salesiani nell’arco di circa cinquant’anni. Tale sguardo ha permesso di evidenziare la peculiare presenza salesiana costruita su materialità, pratiche culturali, finalità e strategie che emergono dalla stessa cartografia. The cartographic representations produced by religious orders are
now attested as a scientific source of the forms of production and use of the geographical knowledge realised between the Middle Ages and the Modern Age. However, geographical literature has not paid the same attention to the cartography of the religious congregations that arose from the seventeenth century on. Among the best-known institutes, don Bosco’s missionaries were the authors of a large number of cartographic representations developed during their itinerant evangelization activities between the colonies of Europeans and the indigenous tribes of Patagonia at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The main objective of this contribution is, therefore: to reconstruct the function attributed to cartographic representation in the activities carried out by the Salesians in Argentina and to deconstruct the transformations of the territory which they carried out and fixed in the maps examined. Therefore, the paper first analyses the interest of Italian geographers in the transformative action of the territory and the cartographic contribution of missionaries in contemporary times through a review of their writings on the subject and then, examines four maps made by Don Bosco’s missionaries over a period of approximately fifty years. This gaze made it possible to highlight the particular Salesian presence built on materiality, cultural practices, purposes and strategies that emerge from the cartography itself.
