This article deals with Georg Kaibel’s scholarly personality, with particular emphasis on his
edition of Athenaeus, which is compared with the more recent edition by S. Douglas Olson. An appendix deals with the problem of the relationship of Athenaeus’ Epitome with the full text handed down from ms. A. Unpublished Greek poems by Wilamowitz and Kaibel himself are published in the article and in its appendices.
