Vie fluviali, tematismo privilegiato nella cartografia degli esploratori italiani dell'africa orientale: tra proposte, polemiche, informazione WATERWAYS, PREFERRED TOPIC WITHIN CΑRΤΟGRΑΡΗΥ ΟF ΙΤΑLΙΑΝ ΕΧΡLΟRΕRS IN EAST AFRICA: AMONG PROPOSALS, DEBATES, ΑΝD ΙΝFΟRΜΑΤΙΟΝ

Vengono analizzate le cartografie redatte dagli esploratori italiani dell'Africa Orientale e il loro contributo alla conoscenza geografica delle regioni attraversate dai fiumi Giuba e Uebi Scebeli. Dopo aver esaminato anche il contesto geo-politico del momento storico nel quale si sono svolte le esplorazioni, una particolare attenzione viene riservata al simbolismo del tema «acqua» e all'impatto che la scoperta dell'«altrove» ha avuto negli esploratori. The aim of this work is to analyze the cartographies drew up by Italian explorers in East Africa and their contribution to the geographical knowledge of the regions crossed by the Rivers Giuba and Uebi Scebell. After analyzing the Geopolitical context of the historical period where the explorations took place, a special attention is addressed to the symbolism of «water» and to the way the discovery and the representation of the «elsewhere» impacted on previous knowledge of explorers.
