Il fondamentale volume di Erich Burck sul cosiddetto ‘manierismo romano’, di cui è
appena uscita una nuova edizione in traduzione italiana, ha influenzato per vari decenni
il dibattito sull’epica e la tragedia latina di I sec. d.C. Questo contributo si propone, anzitutto, di rileggere criticamente il volume e di sviluppare alcune riflessioni sull’effettiva
utilità che un simile termine critico può ancora oggi rivestire. La seconda parte ha
per oggetto un ‘caso-studio’: il confronto fra due narrazioni epiche di battaglie navali,
quelle di Marsiglia (Lucano BC 3) e di Siracusa (Silio, Pun. 14), ci permette di apprezzare
in che modo il poeta flavio ‘incorpori’ il manierismo anticlassico del collega di età
neroniana. The seminal work by Erich Burck on the so called ‘Roman Mannerism, now edited in Italian
translation for the first time, has been one of the most important influences on the debate
about Latin epic and tragedy of the early empire. This article aims at providing a critical
up-to-date rereading of the main topics tackled by the book and offers some thoughts about
the actual usefulness of such a critical term. The second part consists of a case-study: the
comparison between two epic accounts of naval battles, that of Massilia (Lucan BC 3) and
Syracuse (Silius Punica 14), leads us to appreciate how the Flavian poet ‘incorporates’ the
counterclassic mannerism of his Neronian colleague.
