Il contributo parte da un passo interpolato delle 'Mythologiae' di Fulgenzio (I 20, 9-18 Helm),
presente nel solo codice Marciano, in cui è riconoscibile la stratificazione di versioni diverse
del mito di Cerbero, indicato con l’inconsueta denominazione di “Tricerbero”. Si indaga la
fortuna del mito suddetto nel mondo tardo antico. Risulta da un lato la tendenza alla razionalizzazione
del mito, prevalente nell’oriente bizantino, a partire da Palefato, che interpreta
le tre teste di Cerbero come la corruzione di un antico aggettivo “Tricareno” (“abitante di
Tricaria”); dall’altro, la tendenza alla sua interpretazione in senso figurato nell’Occidente,
con l’identificazione delle tre teste con le tre età dell’uomo. La complicata intersezione delle
varianti del mito esclude la possibilità di ricostruire un “modello” letterario, e suggerisce
piuttosto una rete aperta di codifiche e ricodifiche testuali. This paper starts from an interpolated passage of Fulgentius’ 'Mythologiae' (I 20, 9-18 Helm),
which one can find only in the Marcianus manuscript. In this passage, we can individuate
many layers of the myth of Cerberus, here named with the unusual word “Tricerberus”. The
paper investigates the Fortleben of this myth in late antiquity. One can find a trend to rational
explications of the myth in the Greek/byzantine world, starting from Palaephatus, which
explains Cerberus’ three heads as the corruptions of the ancient adjective “Tricarenus”
(inhabitant of Tricaria, sort of ‘Threecaria’). On the other side, in Western world interpretations
trend to allegorize, identifying the three heads with the three main ages of the man.
The complex intersections of the myth’s variants cuts off any possibility to identify a literary
model and rather suggests an open web of textual coding and re-coding.
