The authors reflect on the historical and cultural formation of the landscape of the Missões region in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, composed of Guarani, Jesuits and European immigrants. Given the complexity of the formation of this landscape over almost three centuries, this paper aims to present, in an exploratory approach, the occupation of the territory by different actors, identifying the institutions involved in the process and how they acted in order to promote its preservation, including the current discussion about its recognition as a cultural landscape.
