This essay provides an overview of the evolutionary path to protect the environment, first observing the waves of integrative processes between constitutional and international law and then illustrating the trends that inform the so called global environmental constitutionalism. Then, the essay sustains that a new trend is emerging, given by the constitutionalization of environmental principles, and analyses the meanings of the precautionary principle and of the principle in dubio pro natura.
