Una genealogia rappresenta la dichiarazione del modo in cui un individuo è, o asserisce di essere, connesso
con altri attraverso una discendenza comune. La tradizione greca ha conservato tre diverse genealogie di Kar,
l'eroe eponimo dei Cari. Ogni genealogia connette l'eroe a quattro differenti gruppi etnici: i Lidi (Hdt. I 171,
6), i Misi (Hdt. I 171, 6), i Torrebi (Nic. Dam. <i>FGrHist.</i> 90 F47) e i Cretesi (Ael. <i>Nat.An.</i> XII, 30). L’obiettivo
di questo contributo è comprendere, attraverso lo studio delle tre genealogie conservate e dei loro contesti
storici, se l’elaborazione di queste genealogie possa rappresentare uno strumento per legittimare una
rivendicazione etnica e identitaria. A genealogy is an account of the lineage of a person, family, or group from an individual ancestor. The Greek
mythographical tradition preserves three different genealogies of Kar, the eponymous hero of the Carians. Each
genealogy connects Kar to four different ethnic groups: the Lydians (Hdt. I 171, 6), the Mysians (Hdt. I 171, 6),
the Torrebians (Nic. Dam. <i>GrHist.</i> 90 F47) and the Cretans (Ael. <i>Nat.An.</i> XII, 30). The aim of this paper is to
establish, through the study of the three preserved genealogies and their historical contexts, whether the features
of these genealogies can represent an instrument for legitimizing an ethnic and identity claim.
