Von Wright (1916-2003) is a unique many-sided figure in the twentieth-century philosophical landscape, with potential development for the future thought, still largely unexplored. He has made important contributions in many sectors (Philosophical Logic, Epistemology, Ethics, Theory of Action, Philosophy of Mind, History of Philosophy) dealing with the crucial problems (induction, probability, causality, free will, mind-body, methodology of the Social Sciences, human nature) and bringing in each of these fields the penetrating, but at the same time balanced, light of an flexible analytical style, open to other traditions (especially Hermeneutics). In this outline it was decided not to propose an exhaustive summary of all his production (the most significant deficiencies are noted in the text): this undertaking would require more space; so it was decided to rebuild the basic line of the development of his more mature thought: the philosophy of action, based on the analysis of the concepts of cause, action and freedom. Von Wright (1916-2003) è una figura singolare e poliedrica nel panorama filosofico novecentesco, con potenzialità di sviluppo per il pensiero futuro ancora in gran parte inesplorate. Ha dato contributi importanti in molteplici settori (logica filosofica, epistemologia, etica, teoria dell'azione, teoria della mente, storia della filosofia) occupandosi di nodi cruciali (l'induzione, la probabilità, la causalità, il libero arbitrio, il problema mente-corpo, la metodologia delle scienze storico-sociali, la natura umana) e portando in ciascuno di questi campi la luce penetrante ma pacata di uno stile filosofico analitico estremamente duttile, aperto anche ad altre tradizioni (in particolare l'ermeneutica). In questo profilo si è rinunciato a proporre una sintesi esaustiva su tutta la sua produzione (le mancanze più significative sono segnalate nel testo), impresa che avrebbe richiesto uno spazio maggiore, e si è scelto di ricostruire la linea fondamentale dello sviluppo più maturo del suo pensiero: la filosofia dell'azione, imperniata sull'analisi dei concetti di causa, azione e libertà.
