Abstract
Marginality is not a static concept, but a condition that evolves. The margin, therefore, is not a defined line, but a space of intersection that creates opportunities for context-based design. The research project ‘Bor¬ghi-Boschi’ explores marginality through the context of the mountainous areas of Friuli, a region marked by strong heterogeneity due to geographical, historical, and cultural factors. The research develops from a design-oriented perspective, aiming to recover and revitalize the existing resources of the Friulian mountains, using architecture as a tool to engage with local realities — preserving architectural and cultural heritage, while also addressing modern challenges such as the progressive depopulation of these areas. The project seeks to bring to light testimonies of the Friulian mountains at risk of being forgotten, such as in the case of Montefosca, a hamlet located at the very edge of the Friulian territory, taken here as one of the first case studies in the research. By systematizing its architectural form and its connection with the landscape, the goal is to propose a design toolkit that promotes a wood culture and the sustainable regeneration of the territory, with the aim of developing design strategies that can be replicated in similar contexts.
