The article deals with the phenomenon of “languaging” in German-speaking travel guides on Italy. “Languaging” refers to the insertion of linguistic units from the language of a destination into tourism communication texts written in the language of the tourists, in our case the insertion of Italianisms into the German-language text.
For the investigation, all instances of languaging were extracted from a corpus of six travel guides on the northern Italian region of Friuli Venezia Giulia and examined based on their semantic and functional domains, their status in the donor and recipient languages, their typographic integration and explanation in the text.
For a detailed description of the languaging technique, it was helpful to include terms from loan word research as well as from translation-studies literature on dealing with terms for realia in the approaches to research on tourism communication.
