The chapter concerns the European Parliament and its initiatives in supporting the promotion of minority languages and the protection of linguistic rights between 1979 and 2006.
EP action on this topic is fondamental at the European Community/European Union level. It is very important also from a wider European point of view, with reference to the commitments of other European organisations and institutions and to their impact on state and regional legislation.
Focusing on EP initiatives also means consideration of the relationship between the process of European integration and the protection of minority languages and linguistic rights.
