In this 1998 interview, conducted by Patrick Dieuaide, Pierre Péronnet and Carlo Vercellone, André Gorz explains his endorsement to an unconditional basic income and his original reading of the crisis of the labour-theory of value. Moreover, he argues that the new economic situation should not be read in “productivist” terms – as self-valorization – but rather as a potential for autonomy beyond instrumentality. Finally, Gorz reflects on the sans papiers movement suggesting to link it to the generalization of precariousness.
