Il saggio affronta l’uso dei Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
nello studio delle religioni attraverso un’analisi dei contributi pubblicati
in alcune delle più importanti riviste geografiche internazionali
e nazionali in un periodo compreso tra il 2008 e il 2018. L’esame
del contenuto degli 11 articoli individuati ha permesso di delineare
i principali temi sviluppati e le questioni aperte. La tecnologia GIS
fornisce un valido supporto per tracciare nuovi campi nell’indagine
geografica sulle religioni, integrando l’analisi spaziale con dati socio-
economici, politici ed emozionali che restituiscono complessità
al fenomeno migliorandone la comprensione. Allo stesso tempo, la
disamina ha evidenziato come la diversa natura dei dati georeferenziati
(stime o rilevazioni censuarie/statistiche sulle appartenenze
religiose) incida sulla elaborazione delle carte e sull’analisi che ne
deriva, ponendo alcune questioni metodologiche. The essay addresses the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
in the study of religions through an analysis of the contributions
published in some of the most important international and national
geographic journals in a period between 2008 and 2018. Examination
of the 11 articles identified it allowed to outline the main themes
developed and the open questions. GIS technology provides valuable
support for tracing new fields in the geographical survey of religions,
integrating spatial analysis with socio-economic, political and emotional
data that returns complexity to the phenomenon, improving
its understanding. At the same time, the deepening has shown that
the different nature of the geo-referenced data (estimates or census
surveys/statistics on religious affiliations) affects the elaboration of
the maps and the resulting analysis, posing some methodological
questions.
