The author analyses the last great project (Genesis, 2013) of the Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado, and tries to focus on the idea of earth and life that inspires this work. In the light of its form and content, Genesis does not want to be an example of landscape photography. Furthermore, the link between freedom and wilderness, pointed out by Salgado, differentiates the project from other kinds of images of the Earth, like those taken from space, whose implicit meaning is to celebrate mankind’s victory over the terrestrial bond. In the final part of the paper, the author describes a couple of Salgado’s photos.
