Foucault denied the possibility of architecture to reverse the sense of oppressive devices such as
asylums and exonerated the architect of the “peace crimes” described in the homonymous book by
Franco Basaglia, on which he wrote an essay. The history of the Gorizia psychiatric hospital contradicts
this irrelevance of architecture, showing how Basaglia’s denial of the institution is also achieved
through architectural transformations and the dialogue with various well-known architects.
