Abstract
Sulfonamides-based Schiff base derivatives encompassing the azomethine/amine ([sbnd]C[dbnd]N[sbnd]) group and their metal complexes have attracted the scrutiny of researchers under a diversity of pharmaceutical and pharmacological applications. These active bases are powerful drug-like all-inclusive sulfamoyl chemical derivatives owing to better oral absorption, more reactive, urine excretion and cost-effective nature. Due to their broad-spectrum effect, sulfonamides are characterized by a broad range of pharmaceutical applications as antimicrobial, anticancer, anti-obesity, anti-thyroid agents, enzyme inhibition anti-inflammatory and anti-viral because of chelation, aromaticity, N, S donors, less toxicity, polydentate ligands and stability. In this study, a diversity of organic aldehydes and sulfonamides have been reported to instigate the synthesis of Schiff bases and their coordinated complexes with metals, non-metals as well as lanthanides. Along with that, different advanced spectral and analytical techniques were used for dramatizing and interpretation of the reported Schiff bases and their complexes. This review environs the synthesis, evaluation and biological investigation of sulfonamides-based derivatives and coordinated metal chelates as antimicrobial agents. This review compiles research data for the last 10 years (2014–2024).
