In the last few years we have been continuously involved in bibliometrics: we have actively participated in the first Italian research evaluation exercise, we have read the relevant literature and successfully written our own papers, and we have discussed and contrasted our opinions on the topic with those of other scholars
from our and other fields. Substantially, we have learned some lessons about bibliometrics. We tried to condense some of these learned lessons in this short paper.
