This chapter examines how research in interpreting, interpreting studies, is answering the question whether it is to be considered an application field for linguistics, cognitive sciences, translation or cultural, or wheter they have developed/are developing as an autonomous discipline. To this end the influence of cogntive sciences, neurolinguistics, psycholinguistics and translation studies are examined and methodological proposals are put forward. The conclusion is that interpreting studies have gained autonomy and are defining their borders through the development of their own methods and instruments of anlysis.
