One year after the New Intermodal Hub
of the Trieste Airport offi cially opened,
it is time for a comparative study of the
design and planning process underlying
the construction of the new hub at Ronchi
dei Legionari. The authors illustrate the
main themes and places, techniques,
tools and methods used to conceive,
scale and integrate this new intermodal
infrastructure into the territory, in terms of
city and road planning, and with respect
to the the local, regional, national, and
international scales and dimensions that
an infrastructure of this calibre inevitably
impacts.
The intermodal Hub annexed to the Trieste
Airport is the result of a research project
by the Department of Engineering and
Architecture at the Università degli Studi
within the context of an agreement with
Aeroporti Friuli Venezia Giulia S.p.a. The
requirements that de ned the research
brief derive from the contingent situations
of the airport complex, the desire to
contribute to the growth of passenger
ow and the need to improve access from
the region in general. The request was
thus to provide a formal and functional
solution to speed the project up and
optimize the budget without repercussion
on the quantitative and qualitative aspects
of the work.
