L’autore discute l’etimo del toponimo istriano Verteneglio; dopo una rassegna delle
ipotesi sinora avanzata, viene mostrato che probabilmente si tratta del diminutivo di un
nome preromano, Ortona > Ortonicula, motivato dalla dipendenza del castelliere preromano
di Verteneglio dal castelliere maggiore di Villanova del Quieto. The author discusses the etymology of the Istrian name Verteneglio; after a review of the
hypotheses so far advanced, it is shown that it is probably the diminutive of a pre-Roman name,
Ortona > Ortonicula, motivated by the dependence of the pre-Roman hill-fort of Verteneglio
from the greater castelliere of Villanova.
