L'approccio alla cartografia proposto da Jacques Bertin, ovvero la «Grafica», ha molti elementi comuni con l'approccio GIS che è alla base della attuale catena di produzione della Cartografia. Dopo aver inquadrato la figura di J.Bertin e il suo pensiero, vengono esplicitati una serie di paralleli tra le enunciazioni contenute nella «Grafica» e quelle relative ai GIS, ma soprattutto viene messa in luce la coincidenza metodologica dei due approcci basati sull'analisi dei dati e la progettazione per rispondere alle domande implicite o esplicite dei lettori/utenti. Jacques Bertin's approach to Cartography – what he termed «Graphics» – has much in Common with the GIS approach, which is at the root of today's cartographic production. After an introduction outlining the relevance of J. Bertin and of his thought, this paper will highlight a number of parallels between the principles expressed in his «Graphics» and the GIS procedure. În particular, the Comparison will Show that the two approaches share the same methodology, which is based on data analysis and the consequent phase of design, aimed at the resolution of the user's implicit or explicit requests.
