Abstract
La collina di Festòs ha restituito nell’ultimo secolo una fitta sequenza di livelli archeologici, dalla preistoria fino all’età ellenistica. Per quanto riguarda la fase minoica, i dati testimoniano l’esistenza di un primo Palazzo, poi di un secondo, edificato durante il TM IB, con funzionalità probabilmente solo cultuali, oltre a numerose strutture di dimensioni minori risalenti a diverse epoche. La revisione del record ceramico recuperato durante gli scavi di Doro Levi nel 1965-1966 nell’area a ovest del Piazzale I ha fornito nuovi dati relativi al TM I, un momento delicato per la storia di Festòs per il cambiamento degli equilibri nella regione centro-meridionale di Creta e la conseguente costruzione del Secondo Palazzo. Il lavoro è consistito nella rilettura accurata delle relazioni di scavo delle campagne 1965-1966 e nell’analisi puntuale del materiale inedito. È stato possibile aggiungere nuovi elementi all’interpretazione dell’utilizzo dell’area e del periodo interessati, legando Festòs alle vicende dei siti ‘vicini’ della Messarà. A sequence of archaeological levels ranging from Prehistoric times to the Hellenistic age has been detected on the hill of Festòs during the last century. For the Minoan phase, there are evidences first for an Older Palace, then for a Second Palace built during the LM IB for cultual and religious purpose only, as well as a number of smaller structures dating back to different times. The re-exhamination of the pottery recovered during the excavations of Doro Levi in the ground surface west of Piazzale I (1965-1966) provided new data on the LM I phase, a crucial juncture in the history of Festòs for the changing balance in the central and southern Crete and the construction of the Second Palace that followed. The work is an accurate re-reading of the excavation reports of 1965-1966 and a thorough study of the unpublished material. It has been possible to add new elements to the interpretation of the area’s destination in LM I, by linking Festòs to the events of the ‘close’ sites in the Mesara plane
