Among the Brazilian State capital cities, Porto Alegre is considered a pioneer in the development of public policies aimed at urban forestation. The coexistence between urban trees and cultural assets, however, is not always peaceful. The authors approache this scenario of conflicts from the perspective of the historical evolution of urban forestation in the city between the 70s and the present day. They also discuss the application of the concepts of green infrastructure and cultural landscape to build new public policies aimed at planning and managing urban forestation.
