Von besonderer Bedeutung ist für ihn die Intention des Werkes: Die Erzählung, die als in sich abgeschlossenes Ganzes begriffen wird, ziele darauf, durch die Lehre von der unsterblichen Seele den Wert politischen Einsatzes für das Gemeinwohl vor Augen zu führen. Macrobius’ veränderte Schwerpunktsetzung beruht auf seinem Bildungsziel: Der Kommentar ist nicht Teil eines philosophischen Curriculums, sondern ersetzt es, indem er für die Eliten des fünften Jahrhunderts philosophische Thesen in leicht fassbarer Form präsentiert; die Erläuterungen fügen sich zu einem Kompendium philosophischer Bildung zusammen, dem in den Saturnalien ein Kompendium literarischer Bildung zur Seite gestellt wird. In his commentary on Cicero’s 'Somnium Scipionis', Macrobius uses the neoplatonic philosophical commentaries and also resorts to their schemata isagogica. For him, the most important of these topics is the intention of the work: The tale of Scipio’s dream is not understood as part of a more wide-ranging philosophical work, but as a self-contained entity teaching the immortality of the soul, and is said to aim at showing the value of political commitment to public welfare. Macrobius’s modification of the Greek commentaries is caused by a new educational goal: The commentary is not any longer part of a philosophical curriculum, but replaces it by presenting pivotal philosophical doctrines to the political elite of the fifth century in a comprehensible manner. The explanations result in a philosophical compendium which is complemented by the literary compendium of the Saturnalia
