Many philosophers have argued that belief has an aim. This aim has been traditionally identified with truth. With such a claim these philosophers designate a specific property constitutive of belief characterizing the peculiar relation between this mental state and truth. This property would be able to distinguish beliefs from other types of mental states and to explain a series of other characteristics of beliefs such as, for example, the impossibility to believe at will and the absurdity of asserting so called Moorean sentences (such as “I believe it’s raining but it’s not raining”). In the present contribution I provide an introduction and a discussion of the thesis according to which belief has an aim. I first consider the claim that belief aims at truth. I introduce the main features ascribed to this property, I present several aspects of belief that the aim is supposed to explain and I consider the differences between this and other properties of belief concerning the relation between this mental state and truth. Then I introduce some interpretations of the thesis that belief aims at truth. Finally I outline the main lines of the debate between those who argue that the aim of belief is truth and those who argue that this aim is knowledge. Molti filosofi hanno sostenuto che la credenza abbia uno scopo o un fine, tradizionalmente identificato con la verità. Con tale espressione essi intendono designare una determinata proprietà costitutiva della credenza caratterizzante la peculiare relazione tra questo tipo di stato mentale e la verità. Tale proprietà sarebbe in grado di distinguere le credenze da altri tipi di stato mentale e di spiegare una serie di altre caratteristiche delle credenze quali, per esempio, l'impossibilità di credere arbitrariamente ciò che si vuole e l'assurdità nell'asserire enunciati cosiddetti Mooreani, come "credo che stia piovendo ma non sta piovendo". Nel presente contributo propongo una presentazione e una discussione della tesi secondo cui la credenza avrebbe un fine. Considero dapprima la tesi per cui la credenza avrebbe come fine la verità. Introduco le principali caratteristiche attribuite a questa presunta proprietà, presento vari aspetti della credenza che essa è supposta spiegare e considero le differenze tra questa e altre proprietà della credenza che pongono in relazione tale tipo di stato mentale con la verità. Introduco poi diverse interpretazioni della tesi per cui la credenza avrebbe come fine la verità. Infine presento le linee principali del dibattito tra chi sostiene che il fine della credenza sia la verità e chi invece sostiene che esso sia la conoscenza.
