The theory of calendars is usually presented as an application of continued fractions. In this paper we propose an alternative procedure based on direct calculation of the best rational approximations, suitable in high school. In addition to the classic case of the Gregorian calendar, we consider the lunar Islamic Hegira calendar and the luni-solar Daming calendar proposed by Zu Chongzhi.
