An analysis of the Austrian situation shows that interpreting in police and legal settings is often inadequate. A pilot project in the healthcare sector clearly illustrates, though, that quality standards can be developed and fruitfully implemented. In working towards improving the current state of affairs, a crucial role can be played by the educational system in general and by Translation and Interpreting Studies in particular.
