This paper aims to challenge the quality of the text of Joanot Martorell’s Tirant lo Blanc according to its modern editors, especially Alber Hauf, who had the methodological credit of extending its textual reconstruction beyond the limits of the first known edition. However, as I try to demonstrate, the Barcelonian reissue of Tirant appears pejorative due to several errors shared with the Spanish translation and some traces of typographical alteration. On the contrary, Lelio Manfredi’s Italian translation often seems to be more reliable than the three survived incunabula of the oldest edition; it follows that either Tirante il bianco descended from an exemplar free of known typographical errors, or it is based on an original text far closer to what the author wrote.
