Abstract
This essay is aimed at examining Foscolo’s activity as a Professor of Rhetoric at the University of Pavia, where he taught in 1809. In particular, it focuses on the three lectures on morals in literature, in which Foscolo defines his idea of a literature based on values such as truth and morals. In his view, eloquence becomes an essential tool to transmit these values to the young people, since teaching the new generation represents the real aim of a man of letters.
