IZS PLV 07/25 RC - Determinazione di microplastiche (MPs) in habitat marini e terrestri: indagine sulle diverse vie di assunzione ed accumulo in organismi sentinella ("Whales and Snails")

Il progetto si propone di colmare importanti lacune conoscitive sul ruolo delle MPs e dei contaminanti associati negli ecosistemi marini e terrestri. In ambito marino questa sarà la prima indagine sistematica a livello nazionale volta a valutare la possibile esposizione per via aerogena nei cetacei e nelle tartarughe marine, attraverso l’analisi dei tessuti polmonari. Questo approccio permetterà di chiarire se, oltre alla via orale, esista anche un percorso inalatorio di accumulo delle MPs nei grandi vertebrati marini, fornendo dati finora pressoché inesistenti. Parallelamente, sul versante terrestre, il progetto produrrà nuove conoscenze sul potenziale di bioaccumulo ed eventuale eliminazione di MPs, metalli e composti plastici (ftalati, bisfenolo A) in chiocciole delle specie Helix pomatia e Cornu aspersum, sia allevate che selvatiche.

The project aims to address significant knowledge gaps regarding the role of microplastics (MPs) and associated contaminants in both marine and terrestrial ecosystems. In the marine environment, this will be the first systematic investigation at the national level to assess potential airborne exposure in cetaceans and sea turtles through the analysis of lung tissues. This approach will help determine whether, in addition to the oral route, an inhalation pathway may also contribute to the accumulation of MPs in large marine vertebrates, providing data that are currently almost entirely lacking. At the same time, in the terrestrial environment, the project will generate new knowledge on the potential bioaccumulation and possible elimination of MPs, metals, and plastic-related compounds (phthalates and bisphenol A) in land snails of the species Helix pomatia and Cornu aspersum, including both farmed and wild populations.
