In and Out the Asylum. Psychiatrists, Patients, Families, and States Torn between Psychiatry and Antipsychiatry in the Upper Adriatic Area: A Border History of Psychiatry

Il progetto mira ad analizzare la persistente dialettica tra le tendenze all’istituzionalizzazione e alla deistituzionalizzazione della salute mentale nell’Europa centrale e meridionale dal 1880 agli anni ’80, utilizzando un caso di studio transnazionale che si concentra sulla più ampia regione geopolitica dell’Alpe-Adria, che comprende territori che un tempo facevano parte dell’Impero asburgico e che ora si estendono su quattro pasi dell’Unione Europea: la provincia della Venezia-Giulia, la penisola istriana – compresa la città di Rijeka -, il territorio sloveno e le regioni austriache di Carinzia e Stiria.

The project aims to analyse the persistent dialectic between the institutionalisation and de-institutionalisation trends of mental health in Central and Southern Europe from the 1880s to the 1980s, using a transnational case study focusing on the broader geopolitical region of Alpe-Adria, which encompasses territories that were once part of the Habsburg Empire and now extend over four EU countries: the province of Venezia-Giulia, the Istrian peninsula - including the city of Rijeka -, the Slovenian territory and the Austrian regions of Carinthia and Styria.
